Byres Hub has been continuing to support links between community and research including visitors to our monthly community drop-in

In her latest update, SHW community engagement coordinator Susan Grant looks back on recent events and forward to our exciting Byres Hub Community Day

Byres Hub Community Day 2024

On Saturday 8th June, we will be celebrating our hub community with the local community, colleagues, friends and family. Please do come along and join in the fun and spread the word.

Drop in from 11am – 3pm to our main exhibition area to meet School of Health and Wellbeing staff and community partners for art, exhibitions, refreshments and some pop-up activities and visit our room with a view on the 5th floor of Clarice Pears for some poetry with The Scribblers.

Our sensory friendly hour is from 11am – 12noon and a wellness room will be available for people to visit throughout the day with Mental Health and Wellbeing researchers and volunteers from Differabled Scotland.

We have an amazing line up of music and entertainment outside of Clarice Pears Building on Curling Pond Place from WestFest:

· 12noon Castlemilk Youth Group Musicians

· 1pm SheBoom Samba Band

· 1.30pm Voicebeat Choir

· 2pm MLU Squad Street Dancers

· 2.30pm SoundRoutes Singers

Visitors can also book in advance or on the day onto our ‘Transforming Glasgow’s Health’ escape room challenge at 11am, 12noon, 1pm and 2pm. Register at Byres Hub Community Day 2024. Teams will journey around the Byres Hub Glasgow Subway, and encounter these mini challenges:

· Braille Detective with Sight Scotland

· Day Time Disco with Weekday WOW Factor

· BLS Detective with Lanarkshire Deaf Services

· Break into General Practice with General Practice and Primary Care

· I Spy (Healthy) Glasgow with the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit

· Mind the Heid with Scottish Ambulance Service

· Brain Games with Topple The King Chess

· Community Resilience with Global Mental Health and Public Health Masters students

· The Health Secretary with Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment group

They will then meet the The Ideas Club for ‘Hold the Front Page’ to write their own headlines for what they want to see the stories being about Glasgow’s Health in the Glasgow Metro newspaper while riding in the Subway ten years from now.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the planning of this event. We hope lots of people will come along and our volunteers will be there to meet them. It’s completely free to attend thanks to funding from the School of Health and Wellbeing, MVLS Engage and support from The Ideas Club.

SHW Teaching Research and Clinical Away Day

Thanks to everyone who joined in ‘Susan Says’ at the ‘Relevant and Responsive Research session at this year’s Teaching, Research and Clinical away day and who have followed up with the Hub since. Thanks to ‘The Wower’s’ who are our Weekday WOW Factor volunteers at our monthly Community Drop-ins who helped design the session and to Susan and Sara’s co-presenter, Dr Gillian Lang, Director of Experience Development at Glasgow Science Centre for sparking our ideas about Glasgow’s Health Exhibition. Ella who has been with the school’s admin team on work experience recently has collated these in a Padlet that UofG staff and students can access at this link below and add further thoughts on the ideas by leaving a comment. You can also indicate the ideas you like best by clicking on the hearts under posts.

Scottish Learning Disabilities Week 2024

Our Human Condition - as part of Scottish Learning Disabilities Week, The Scottish Learning Disability Observatory and Byres Community Hub were delighted to feature Our Human Condition print and digital exhibition from 6th-10th May as alongside displays of three recent projects led by the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory. The beautiful and powerful photographs of siblings definitely stopped people in their tracks passing through Byres Hub. I hope some of you managed to catch it.

Learn to Knit

As part of our SHW Community Christmas Tree Project, Lorraine Wadell is putting together, we had a learn to knit lunchtime in Byres Hub with staff, students, the public and members of the U3A knitting group. We look forward to more sessions like this including with members of the Beyond the Canvas project with Empower Women for Change. We are still accepting donations for knitted or crochet squares. Templates are all around Level 1 of Clarice Pears. Photo below of our mini tree and from the learn to knit session.
