Exploring reasons for different health outcomes in identically deprived post-industrial UK cities

David Walsh (Public Health Programme Manager, Glasgow Centre for Population Health)

Rescheduled from 25 January

3pm, Room 916, Adam Smith Building

The presentation will discuss the concept of 'excess mortality' (that is, over and above that explained by levels of deprivation) in Scotland and, particularly, Glasgow, in comparison with other, similar, parts of the UK (specifically, the post-industrial cities of Liverpool and Manchester).

A considerable number of theories have been proposed to explain this 'excess'; and the presentation will particularly focus on the analysis of new data collected from a population survey in the three cities (Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester) by which some of these theories have been examined in detail.

All welcome.
