STEM in Gorbals

Dr Jana Anderson from Public Health, SHW, was one of the exhibitors that came together for this year’s STEM in Gorbals which took place in Blackfriars primary school on the 7th June 2024.
Dr Jana Anderson from Public Health, SHW, was one of the exhibitors that came together for this year’s STEM in Gorbals which took place in Blackfriars primary school on the 7th June 2024. The theme was “Gorbals Heritage Investigators” and it was based around the local historical concept of The Franciscan Circle and the Southern Necropolis. Friends of Southern Necropolis with Colin Mackie, the Community History Coordinator, introduced the history to the children from both Blackfriars Primary and St Francis Primary. Dr Saeeda Bhatti from STEM in Gorbals and MVLS linked STEM concepts to the historical information. Jana was helped by Megan Kelso, a STEM ambassador and a former student of MVLS Masters in Medical Genetics and Genomics. The children were introduced to the importance of our food on our health and the impact that our food -from production to the food wasted- has on our planet. Children learned about healthy diet through constructing their own Eat well plate using toy food, and they learn about macronutrients and calorific content and how to find these facts about food using food labels on the packaging. Through interactive display the children learned about how our food production affects the planet -in terms of land use, water use, how our food system contributes to climate change and biodiversity loss. At the end, the children created personal card with a message to themselves in 10 years from now which was placed into a time capsule box.
