The MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit has published a new briefing, "The effect of income changes on mental health and wellbeing in working-age adults".

It summarises a recently published paper, which found that income changes likely have a causal effect on mental health and wellbeing, particularly where they move individuals out of poverty, although effect sizes are modest and certainty low.

Effects are larger for wellbeing outcomes and potentially for income losses. The findings to the evidence base supporting income supplementation as a way to improve mental health and wellbeing and to reduce health inequalities, especially when targeted at those on the lowest incomes.
