The UCET 2017 - Chengdu programme reflected a wide spectrum of research topics on emerging technologies in electronics and microelectronics, communications, photonics, biomedical etc., building bridges between various research fields. UCET was established this year and has emerged as a unique opportunity where UK and Chinese academics and industries can present their research to explore joint collaborations.

The workshop attracted over 50 participants including students, researchers, university professors and companies working in the field of emerging technologies in electronics and microelectronics, communications and photonics from various British and Chinese universities and companies. The invited speakers of UCET 2017 included internationally recognized experts in the relevant field of emerging technologies over the UK and China.

The one-day workshop started by Prof Xiong Caidong, Vice President of UESTC, was opened by Prof Qiang Li, Vice Dean of UESTC School of Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics, and Prof John Marsh, Dean of Glasgow College UESTC. Multidisciplinary talks focused on new technologies in emerging areas such as imaging, communications, flexible electronics, wearable electronics, photonics, and biomedical engineering. The nine invited lectures included: Prof Shangjian Zhang, School of Optoelectronic Information, UESTC, China; "Imaging Technologies from the Visible to Terahertz" by Prof David Cumming, University of Glasgow, UK; "Network Slicing for 5G" by Prof Gang Feng, UESTC, China; "Electronic Skin and Flexible Electronics" by Prof Ravinder Dahiya, University of Glasgow, UK; "The recent progress of laser beam quality control based on adaptive optics" by Prof Ping Yang, Institute of Optics and Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; "Fabrication of InP based Multi-Wavelength Light Sources" by Prof Song Liang, Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; "Engineered materials to promote bone healing" by Prof Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez, University of Glasgow, UK; "Wearable Ear-EEG Readout System Based on Dry-Contact Active Electrodes" by Prof Xiong Zhou, UESTC, China and "Emerging Technologies in 5G Cellular Networks" by Prof Muhammed Imran, University of Glasgow, UK.

We would like to acknowledge the important role played by the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society, and the UESTC local organization committee members (in particular Prof Qiang Li and Ms Yuxi Zhai) for their support. The next Edition of UCET 2017 will take place at the University of Glasgow from 7-9 August 2017. More information about UCET 2017 - Glasgow is available at: www.gla.ac.uk/ucet/
