Biography

Dr Katherine Price is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Physiology and Human Biology, with a diverse background that bridges clinical practice and education. After obtaining her medical degree (MBChB), she spent 16 years in clinical medicine, gaining broad experience across various specialties. She ultimately specialized in Emergency Medicine, where she worked as a Consultant. This extensive clinical background informs her approach to education, blending real-world experience with academic insight.

Transferring into the field of medical and life sciences education, Katherine has earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has achieved Senior Fellowship in the University of Glasgow’s Recognising Excellence in Teaching (RET) framework and is an active member of the University’s Teaching Excellence Network. Her commitment to teaching excellence is reflected in her innovative approaches to curriculum design and delivery, ensuring students engage with content in meaningful and dynamic ways.

 

 

 

Research interests

Katherine's research primarily focuses on advancing pedagogical practices, particularly active learning techniques such as problem-based learning (PBL). She is passionate about interdisciplinary teaching and the integration of creative arts and humanities within scientific curricula, exploring how these intersections can enrich the learning experience.

Her research extends to the study of learning communities and their role in fostering professional development among staff, with a particular emphasis on collaboration and peer support.

Additionally, Dr Katherine Price supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, particularly in areas related to physical activity for health, lifestyle medicine, and historical perspectives that enhance our understanding of contemporary medical and physiological issues. Her subject expertise is further applied in projects that aim to improve STEM education access for Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showman, and Boater (GTRSB) communities, using physiology as a gateway to broader scientific engagement.

Supervision

Teaching

Dr. Katherine Price is the Programme Lead for the BSc Honours degree in Human Biology and co-ordinates the final-year course Current Topics in Human Biology & Physiology (BIOL 4225). In addition to her leadership responsibilities, she plays an integral role in student advising, having previously served as Deputy Chief Adviser for Life Sciences and College Retention and Transitions Officer.

Her teaching covers a broad range of subjects, including general physiology, pathophysiology, bioethics, and the role of science in media. Dr. Price is also enthusiastic about integrating creative arts into the scientific curriculum, exploring how interdisciplinary approaches can enrich student engagement and deepen understanding of complex biological concepts.

In addition to her course contributions, Dr. Price supervises a wide range of Life Sciences undergraduate research projects, including dissertations and projects focused on education and outreach. She also supervises students pursuing MSc projects in Sport & Exercise Science & Medicine. Her creative and interdisciplinary approach supports student projects that connect science and the arts, as well as those grounded in clinical and biomedical science.
