Janice Richardson has just spent a very memorable three and a half weeks camping with The Scientific Exploration Society on the Mongolian Khan Khentii expedition where perhaps as much as 40% of Mongolians still live pastoral lifestyles. The mission was to assist the people of the Khentii area in Eastern Mongolia and undertake archaeological, botanical, ornithological, and zoological tasks for the respective Mongolian scientific bodies. However, being enthusiastic about cardiovascular disease prevention, Janice also had the privilege of performing cardiovascular screening clinics. Using a GlucoRx POC meter to test total cholesterol levels and blood pressure readings using an Omron monitor, clinics were facilitated with the help of an expedition member acting as a translator. Gifts from the University of Glasgow and other kind gift donations were much appreciated by the children and adults attending the clinics. Although she was able to conduct basic medical consultations through a translator, language was a barrier for the few cases which required more elaborate medical questioning and advice on management. In total, she performed n=88 cardiovascular screening checks on Mongolian adult nomads.
