"Can Markets Be Caring?"
Thursday, 25 January. 14:00-15:30
Room 142, Adam Smith Business School

Abstract

We are in the midst of an unprecedented global “crisis of care”, for both people and the planet. Yet, the role of markets and consumerism in perpetuating this crisis is little understood. I examine the effects of the marketization of care across different scales or pillars of care provision: households, communities, and states. I argue that the increasing marketization of care across theses scales is beset with problematic logics and contradictions that offer little for providing a way out of this crisis. At the same time, however, markets are here to stay, and it is important to make them work "for" rather than "against" care. I therefore discuss whether care logics and market logics could be reconciled.
