Economics in Glasgow has developed a long-term research network with Nankai University in China, which is one of the University of Glasgow’s strategic partners. In March 2014, the Collaborative Innovation Centre on Chinese Economy (CICCE) between Nankai and Glasgow was established, aiming to strengthen the research collaboration between the two institutions and provide relevant policy suggestions to the Chinese government on its economic development. Since then, a large number of international workshops, mutual delegation visits, summer schools, public lectures and online international forums have been organised between Nankai and Glasgow.

This year, jointly with the Confucius Institute of the University of Glasgow, we invited Dr Chunyuan Huang from Nankai University to deliver a public lecture for Economics students in Glasgow on the 24 October 2022. Dr Huang is an Associate Professor of Economics at Nankai University, and the Director of the International Trade Division of the Department. The lecture was chaired by Professor Sai Ding, one of the Economics Subject Leads and the leading contact of CICCE. The topic of the lecture is ‘the trend and influence of global value chain reconstruction,’ which comes at the right time when the global economy is facing an unprecedented level of uncertainty and international trade is facing high disruption. Dr Huang discussed the global value chain participation of Chinese industries and its time trend, and found that intermediate inputs play a key role in shaping China’s global value chain participation. She also examined the structural impact of global value chains on global trade and offered insightful opinion on the impact of COVID-19 on the global value chains and trade growth both globally and in China.

This lecture has been hugely successful by attracting a large number of students at all undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research levels in Economics. Our students have shown great interests in the topic and demonstrated very good understanding by asking lots of interesting questions and actively interacting with the speaker.
