Name: Marvin Minto Simpson

Home country: UK

"I am a previous Geography undergraduate who has always been interested in trying to find solutions to the problems people face locally and across the world. This interest brought me to Glasgow where I had the opportunity to delve into some of these issues more deeply whilst meeting like-minded individuals.

Outside of studies I am avid sports fan be it football, rugby, combat sports, tennis, badminton, basketball, etc. I had a great time as a member of the UofG American Football team whilst at the University, which introduced me to people and forged memories I will cherish and never forget."

Why did you choose the Adam Smith Business School?

I wanted to explore the connection between environmental problems and economic problems more closely and what better place to do that than in the home of the widely renowned father of neoclassical economics, Mr Adam Smith. The university's reputation made the Adam Smith Business School seem like the logical destination.

What did you enjoy the most about your programme? How has your degree helped you in your career?

I enjoyed learning about the inequal growth and development of nations across the world, in particular the difference in development between ex-colonies post colonialism in the module on Growth & Development. I'm confident through tenacity and preparation I will find ways to make my degree help me in my career goals.

What have you been up to since graduating from the Business School?

Professionally I've been working as a customer intelligence officer for the West Midlands Combined Authority. I'm part of a good team and the job offers rewarding moments when assisting members of the public.

Personally, I've been enjoying reading for leisure rather than purely study, spending time with family and friends and learning Italiano.

What was the most important thing you learnt while studying at Glasgow?

My capacity to manage multiple interests and maintain high performance. Also, always bring a raincoat no matter how sunny the sky seems!

What is your top piece of advice for current students – our future alumni?

Figure out a rough idea of what kind of careers or jobs you're interested in and apply before finishing Uni. If you don't plan on working straight away and fancy taking a break, still do your research and apply for things you might want to do in future.

And be yourself, always.

Tell us about your fondest memory at the Business School.

The juxtaposition between the first day looking across the lecture hall trying to figure out who everyone was and what kind of person they all were, to the final day of seeing everyone at graduation and reminiscing about the good, the bad and the ugly times.
