Stephen Scholes, Lecturer in Education, has been awarded an Action Research Grant by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) for session 2020-2021 to explore teachers’ uses of data and performance information in Scottish primary schools.

Scottish education policy is currently focused on raising attainment for all and tackling social disadvantage through teachers’ use of performance information to monitor progress, intervene in learning, and adapt teaching practices. In response to these policy developments, this project aims to better understand how staff in Scottish primary schools are engaging with and using data, which types of data are being used and for what purposes data is being used.

The insights gained from this study will contribute to discussions relating to teachers’ uses of data in the context of attempts to close poverty-related attainment gaps and raise standards in schools. Moreover, this work will be used to provide research-informed insights and contributions to teacher education programmes in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
