The release of the University's 'Understanding Racism, Transforming University Cultures' report in February gave an unequivocal recognition of the work and commitment that must be actioned at the University of Glasgow in order to make our campuses truly inclusive for staff and students.

As the University begins the extensive work towards the accompanying Action Plan, I would like to extend an invitation to all staff to attend an event specifically focused on one of the four underpinning principals embedded in the plan: "Our curriculum and learning community will thrive when it is reflective of global perspectives and race equality is embedded". I am delighted to announce that Professor Nazira Karodia from the University of Wolverhampton will be delivering the plenary talk for this event.

The event will be a half-day symposium, open to all staff and students, running on 26th May between 9:30 – 13:30. It will provide an opportunity to explore how we can combat racism at the University, and how and why we might decolonise the curriculum. The symposium will consist of four sessions:

  • A plenary talk delivered by Professor Nazira Karodia
  • A series of lightening talks from University of Glasgow staff
  • A student round-table
  • A staff/student panel discussion

This event will be hosted on Zoom, with further details to follow.

We understand that commitment to half a day may be conflicting with current schedules, and so please know that you are welcome to come along for any of the sessions that you are able to attend. The event will also be recorded for those that are unable to attend on the day.

You can register for the event via the Eventbrite page.
