Professor Chris Pearce, currently the Dean of Research in the College of Science and Engineering, will assume responsibility for the role until a full internal and external search has been undertaken for the position of Vice Principal for Research in late 2020. A phased handover will take place over the next couple of months.

The Principal, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, said: "I am indebted to Miles for the tremendous energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism that he has brought to the University, and for the considerable difference that he has made, not only to our research ambition but even more importantly to advancing our research culture and inspiring an ethos of collegiality among the academic community."

Professor Padgett said: "I have relished my time as VP Research here in Glasgow. I am immensely proud of what has been achieved and for this I thank the fantastic team I worked with, especially the Head of Research Policy, the College Deans of Research and our wider academic body, for driving our research excellence and transforming the University's research culture into one where we celebrate early career researchers and support one another to succeed."

Professor Pearce said: "This is a great opportunity to take forward the work that Miles has been delivering on. It is also a tremendous challenge to take on the role of VP Research at what is a critical time for the University, particularly as we move towards the REF."
