Short Description
This course aims to promote engagement with and research in organisational settings by professionals. Participants will be supported to appraise critically published research relevant to their practice and to problematise aspects of practise and plan research to inform improvement planning in the workplace.

Course Aims
■ To develop ability to access and critically review relevant literature
■ To continue to develop a critically reflective approach to practice
■ To acquire an understanding of the range of paradigms appropriate to educational research including, action research, collaborative professional enquiry and practitioner-based enquiry
■ To develop research skills - qualitative and quantitative methods of enquiry, including an introduction to data analysis - relevant to school-based enquiry
■ To develop skill in using research evidence to make educational decisions
■ To enable students to work ethically in practitioner research
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Use search techniques to access and record information to fulfil research needs
■ Evaluate information sources and critically review information retrieved
■ Identify strengths and weaknesses of different data gathering techniques used in practitioner research
■ Conduct preliminary analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
■ Pose appropriate clear questions which indicate the focus of a proposed enquiry
■ Apply ethical guidelines when appraising published research
■ Use ethical guidelines in preparing proposals for practitioner enquiry (insider research)
■ Design and justify an appropriate methodology for a small-scale, practice-based enquiry
