Short Description
The use of critical reflection to determine professional development in relation to the Standard for Childhood Practice.

Assessment
The assignment is in three parts:
1. Participants will critically review the nature of professionalism and professional development for all professions. Students should consider this in relation to policy, legislation and practice , based on relevant literature and reflection on practice, which reflect national and supranational changes to childcare (1,000 words +/- 10%)) 40%
2. Participants will prepare a rationale for their programme of study within the BA Childhood Practice programme, based on the appraisal of their own professional development needs, and, where possible, following negotiation with colleagues. The context for development will be their current work setting.
Students will undertake a review of their current professional position in relation to the Standard for Childhood Practice (SSSC, 2015) and indicate three areas for development which will provide a basis for part 3 of the assessment,(1000 +/- 10%) 40%
3. Participants will also be expected to develop a plan of action, identifying at least three points for development, mapping out their development needs during the course of study. (no word count) 20%
Students are required to successfully complete two sections of this assignment.
Course Aims
The course aims to:
encourage students to develop a critical and self-analytical approach to their current and future professional development needs.
enable students to prepare a personal learning plan matched against the Standard for Childhood Practice (SSSC, 2015).
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
Critically reflect on their professional experience to date
Critically review the nature of professionalism
Use the Standard for Childhood Practice (SSSC, 2015) as a platform to identify issues relating to their professional development
Plan and set targets for professional development within the BA Childhood Practice programme
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
At least 66% attendance. Students must attend the equivalent of 2 full days of input out of 3.
Participation in formative assessment task.
Submission of summative assessment task.
Students must pass two out of the three assessment elements to obtain a pass grade.
