Short Description

The course will examine the social, economic, and political history of Scotland from 1707 to 1838. We will identify and analyse the main developments in society and culture during this period. Focus will be given to agricultural development, industrialisation, urbanisation and the Enlightenment. Among other themes the course will consider Jacobitism, demographic change including clearance and emigration, and the economic consequences of union.

Assessment

One essay of 1500 words (75%)

A short analysis/commentary of a primary source of 800-1000 words (25%)

Course Aims

The course aims to;

 

■ Investigate the impact of industrialisation and urbanisation on the wider social, economic and political development of Scotland during the defined period of 1707-1838

■ Introduce students to the most important scholarly debates about this period.

■ Develop a familiarity with the various primary and secondary source material.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Identify the main developments in society, politics and the economy in Scotland during the period including in the areas of agricultural development, industrialisation, urbanisation and the Enlightenment.

■ Use and critically evaluate a range of source material including primary and secondary sources relevant for interpreting the period.

■ Construct an argument on conflicting historical interpretations of the period.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
